Improving Communication between Care Givers and Care Receivers
Saturday, August 14, 2010 11 am-1 pm
Location: United Way, 50 Waugh Drive, Houston, TX (see map below)
DESCRIPTION: Whether you're providing care or receiving help from someone else, the strain on the relationship of caring and being cared for is huge. Whether the relationship is with a spouse, a partner, a parent or a child, it influences the nature of the relationship, often causing an overdeveloped sense of responsibility for one and helplessness for the other. For the care giver, there's no way to avoid moments of resentment and burden. For the one who is cared for, there's no way to avoid moments of frustration and guilt. And both individuals wish it didn't have to be like this. Dr. Mary Burnside will explore the ways in which these realities affect the relationship between care providers (even professional ones!) and those who depend on being cared for. She will also present suggestions for increasing and improving communication between care giver and care receiver and answer questions from the audience about specific problems and concerns.
SPEAKER: Mary Burnside is a clinical psychologist who has practiced in Houston for over 30 years. She attended Rice University and trained at the University of Houston, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, and the Veteran's Administration Medical Center. She served on the faculty at Baylor, directing research and supervising psychology interns; she continues to supervise interns currently. She specializes in working with individuals with medical conditions, their families and caregivers. Dr. Burnside has a warm and practical approach, providing down-to-earth solutions to problems people bring her.
